Background of the Study
Ergonomics is a crucial aspect of workplace safety that focuses on designing work environments to minimize strain on workers. Office workers are increasingly at risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) due to prolonged sitting, poor posture, repetitive movements, and inadequate workstation designs (Adeyemi & Bello, 2024). Common MSDs include lower back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, neck strain, and joint pain.
In Sokoto State, many office workers experience work-related discomfort due to poor ergonomic conditions. However, limited attention is given to ergonomics in office settings, leading to an increased prevalence of MSDs and reduced workplace productivity (Okafor et al., 2023). This study aims to evaluate the ergonomic hazards that office workers in Sokoto State face and assess their impact on musculoskeletal health.
Statement of the Problem
Many office environments in Sokoto State lack ergonomic workstations, leading to increased cases of musculoskeletal disorders among employees. Prolonged exposure to poor seating arrangements, inadequate computer screen placement, and repetitive tasks contribute to chronic pain and physical discomfort. Despite growing concerns, there is insufficient research on ergonomic hazards in office settings. This study seeks to assess the impact of poor ergonomics on musculoskeletal health and propose interventions to improve workplace conditions.
Objectives of the Study
To identify common ergonomic hazards faced by office workers in Sokoto State.
To assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among office employees.
To recommend ergonomic interventions for reducing workplace-related MSDs.
Research Questions
What are the major ergonomic hazards experienced by office workers in Sokoto State?
How do ergonomic hazards contribute to musculoskeletal disorders among office workers?
What measures can improve workplace ergonomics and reduce MSD cases?
Research Hypotheses
Poor ergonomic conditions in office workplaces contribute to increased cases of musculoskeletal disorders.
Office workers with prolonged exposure to ergonomic hazards are more likely to develop chronic pain conditions.
Implementing ergonomic interventions will reduce the incidence of MSDs among office employees.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on office workers in various organizations in Sokoto State, evaluating their workstation conditions and reported musculoskeletal health issues. Limitations may include resistance from employers to implement suggested ergonomic changes and difficulty in obtaining self-reported health data from employees.
Definitions of Terms
